Fred and Cornelia Hensley were charter members of St. Martin's-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church. They were energetic parishioners with a zest for life, an appreciation of God's blessings, and an understanding of the meaning of stewardship.
The Hensleys had no children, and in planning what might best be done with their estate, they decided to leave a legacy to benefit a place where they had been blessed --- St. Martin's. Their wills provided that a majority of the surviving spouse's estate was left to the St. Martin's-in-the-Fields Foundation. The Foundation was instructed to invest the principal and to use the income from these investments to further the ministries at St. Martin's. In their wills, the Hensleys designated several areas as appropriate for the use of the Fund's income, including the following:
-
Enabling parishioners to get special training in order to strengthen the spiritual, educational, pastoral and outreach ministries of St. Martin's. ·
-
Providing scholarship assistance to parishioners who are studying for the ordained ministry or some other full-time Christian service.
-
New construction at St. Martin's for the primary benefit of young people.
In this sense, the Hensley Fund has a slightly different focus from the General Fund of the St. Martin's Foundation. Whereas the General Fund was established for the primary purpose of helping those beyond the parish, the Hensley fund has been established to help strengthen those within the parish, so that they in turn, we can better carry out the ministries entrusted to them.
