Haiti Outreach Opportunities

Bread & Water Fund - Rescue, Cange Haiti: The diocesan "Bread & Water Fund - Rescue, Cange, Haiti" will ensure the viability of the local water supply, which is a mainstay of our ministries there, and support immediate needs in Cange as necessary, including the hospital, which is now receiving an immense influx of injured. The water system is in urgent need of repairs to the water system far beyond the leak identified in this November 2009 photo.

Contributions for support of relief efforts in Cange can be made on-line or mailed to: EDUSC, Haiti Disaster Relief, 1115 Marion Street, Columbia, SC 29201 **MARK THE CHECKS: BREAD & WATER – RESCUE, CANGE, HAITI

Chapoteau Partners: The Episcopal parishes of St. John's Shandon, St. Martin's, St. Mary's, St. Simon & St. Jude, and St. Francis have made a long term commitment to support the St. Mathieu School at Chapoteau, Haiti. The community of Chapoteau is across Lake Péligre from Cange. Most of the parishes of the Upper Diocese of South Carolina have made similar commitments with one of the 17 schools in the region around Cange, Haiti. We expect the number of school age children in the entire area will dramatically increase from the exodus from earthquake in Port-au-Prince. Click here for a short slide-show about a November 2009 visit from one our parish partners.

To support this mission please mark your checks "Chapoteau" in the memo portion of your check written to St. Martin's.

Crayton Outreach Project

St. Martin's has been involved with Crayton Middle School for many years in the past, most notably with the Crayton "Learning the Ropes" Orientation Program. Currently the outreach committee for Crayton Middle School has committed to providing Teacher's luncheons quarterly in order to provide an opportunity for the teachers to communicate with one another without the burdens of preparing food or tending to students' needs.

The outreach project has expanded to include a pilot after-school program for 6th grade girls entitled Girl's Circle. It is managed by the Palmetto Center for Women and meets every afternoon from 3:45p - 6:00pm.

To become involved in this project contact Marnie Smith, parish administrator, 787-0392, or email her at marnie.smith@stmartinsinthefields.com.

Habitat for Humanity

Each year St. Martin's works to build a home for the Habitat for Humanity Blitz Build. Many hands make the work light as volunteers gather together to bring homes to the homeless.

Contact the parish office at 787-0392 if you are interested in joining this outreach opportunity.

Drop In Nursery

St. Martin's Drop-In Nursery which has been voted two years in a row in the Palmetto Parent magazine as Columbia's "Best Drop-In." is an outreach ministry of St. Martin's parish.  Its purpose is to provide non-curricular child care on a drop-in basis and to offer parents an opportunity to spend time away from their children with the assurance that their children are well cared for in a healthy environment.  Its aim is to provide a safe, caring organization in which children develop social skills through supervised activities.

St. Luke’s Lunch Ministry

St. Martin’s remains faithful in serving lunch to homeless individuals six times a year at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in the Waverly section of Columbia. The Ministry volunteers plan, purchase, prepare and serve the meals along with a cadre of behind the scene helpers who bake cakes, collect and distribute clothing. A nurse takes blood pressure and consults on a variety of medical issues brought to them. If you would like to be involved in this ongoing ministry, even on a temporary or peripheral basis, please let the church office know 787-0392 know.

Too many people are living in desperate situations, and we seek the dignity and well-being of all people.
