On September 11th, in conjunction with Stop
Hunger Now, St. Martin’s Parish packaged
25,000 meals to help end world hunger. We
raised funds and gathered volunteers
to impact 25,000 people.
Founded in 1998, Stop Hunger Now is driven
by a vision to end world hunger in our lifetime.
SHN’s meal packaging program is a volunteer-
based program that coordinates the
streamlined packaging of highly nutritious
dehydrated meals comprised of rice, soy,
vegetables, flavoring and 21 essential vitamins
and minerals. The meals are easily transported
to crisis-burdened areas or supplied to school
feeding programs around the world. The meals
cost only $0.25 per meal to create.
Nearly 30,000,000 meals have
been packaged across the nation
since the program’s inception.

Haiti Outreach Opportunities
The Diocese of Upper South Carolina has been active in supporting the health, educational, physical, and spiritual needs of Cange, Haiti and many surrounding communities for more than 30 years. Our diocese has completed the Bread and Water Fund Drive. Work is underway to complete the vocational school near Cange early this spring. Also, the rebuilding of the Cange Water project is well underway and most improvements will be completed in 2012. Plan to attend the Partnership Cange Symposium at 9 a.m. Feb. 25, 2012, at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in downtown Columbia for a complete update on our ministry in Cange and the surrounding villages. To get a peek at some of the progress we have made, click here.
“Not by Bread Alone,” the Campaign to rebuild Holy Trinity Cathedral, Port-au-Prince. Our Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Andrew Waldo, has challenged each of us in the diocese to give $20. We have taken collections on two Sundays so far, but we have not yet made our target of this amount for every person in our congregation. For more information, click here. To make a contribution through the Diocesan website and credit St. Martin’s with your contribution, please click here.
Chapoteau Partners: In 2006 the Episcopal parishes of St. John's Shandon, St. Martin's, St. Mary's, St. Simon & St. Jude, and St. Francis made a long term commitment to support the St. Mathieu School at Chapoteau, Haiti. The community of Chapoteau is across Lake Péligre from Cange. We have doubled the size of the elementary school and continue to support the school at Chapoteau. Some of the students at Chapoteau go on to get a high school education at Cange.
In June 2010, one of the members of St. Martin’s, Paul Palmer, went to Haiti with a small group of laypersons and clergy, including our new Bishop, The Rt. Rev. W. Andrew Waldo, to visit with people engaged with the ministry of the Episcopal Church in Haiti in Port-au-Prince, Cange, Chapoteau, and several other communities near Cange. Click here to view newly consecrated Bishop Andrew Waldo's reflections on the trip: www.edusc.org/e-DUSCNewsletter/080510/diocesan.html. Click here to the gallery of ten slide shows that tell the story of the visit and share observations of our current mission and ministry in Haiti, including one slide show to update you on our ministry at Chapoteau: ptpalmer.com/lightroom/2010_06_haiti/overview/. All the photo slide shows and video clips include delightful music by the Bon Sauveur Choir, Cange Haiti.
Most of the parishes of the Upper Diocese of South Carolina have made similar commitments with one of the 17 schools in the region around Cange, Haiti. We expect the number of school age children in the entire area will dramatically increase from the exodus from earthquake in Port-au-Prince. Click here for a short slide-show about a November 2009 visit from one our parish partners.
To support this mission please mark your checks "Chapoteau" in the memo portion of your check written to St. Martin's. If you are interested in more information about our ministry in Haiti, please contact Galen McWilliams or Paul Palmer.
